Bennett Concert Band Contract,
Goal, and Syllabus Sheet
Goals (rubric) for the Bennett Intermediate Band:
· to demonstrate regular practice habits at home
· to learn to play, using proper breath support
· to play expressively, with appropriate dynamics, phrasing, and interpretation
· to play a varied repertoire of songs representing genres and styles from diverse cultures
· to play in groups, matching dynamic levels, and responding to the cues of a conductor
· to work cooperatively with others
· to use proper technique, notes and rhythms
· to play with good tone and intonation
· to attend each rehearsal on time
· to come to each rehearsal prepared with folder, music, and pencil
· to be a committed and dependable member of the ensemble
Rehearsal Schedule
Band rehearsals take place on Tuesdays and Fridays promptly at 2:40. Rehearsal will conclude at 3:25 and all students will be dismissed directly to the bus from rehearsal. Students must come to rehearsal packed for home and ready to go to dismissal.
Grading Policy
Students will be graded weekly in the following categories:
Participation, Rotations, and Rehearsals. The goals listed above in the rubric will also be used to define each child’s proficiency in each of these categories.
Binder Check and Materials
Periodic binder checks will take place throughout the school year. All students are required to have a hard cover black binder for their first music lesson. All music and handouts will be put in this binder. The binder must be brought to every lesson. Please come to me if you are unable to get a binder and I will provide one for you.
All students are required to have colored pencils to assist in score preparation. The colors that are needed are Blue, Red, Green, Brown, and Yellow.
Rehearsal Attendance
In the event that a student arrives late to rehearsal they must come provide an excuse slip from their teacher stating why they were late. If you are late, please place your excuse on the corner of the podium and take your assigned spot in band without disrupting the rehearsal. Students who are continually late or miss rehearsal may be dropped from the course.
Required Concerts
This year’s required concerts both take place at the High School in Harry Simon auditorium:
Bennett 5th & 6th Grade Winter Concert:
Wednesday, December 18 @ 7:00PM
Bennett 5th & 6th Grade Spring Concert:
Thursday, May 21 @ 7:00PM
Please place these dates in your calendars. Many other concerts will be scheduled over the school year and will be found on my webpage.
Instrument Rental
All students wishing to have an instrument will be provided one from school, however some are quite old and are in need of repairs throughout the school year. Therefore, I highly recommended that students entering 5th and 6th grade consider renting or purchasing a higher quality instrument elsewhere. Below are a few music stores that are recommended:
The Musicworks Barcone’s Music
(845) 246-3910 (845) 331-6089
For those of you who choose to use a school instrument, any repairs that result from negligence or misuse by the student or family will be the responsibility of the borrower. Any general “wear and tear” maintenance will be covered by the school.
Other Materials
Students must have their own method book. All 5th & 6th grade brass and woodwind students should have an Essential Elements book 1. All percussionists should have Breeze Easy Percussion book 1. These books can be found at the music stores list above. Upon completion of these books we will then purchase the second book of this series.
All students should have a music stand for home practice. The music stand does not need to come to school. Music stands can be purchased at any area music store, and the price is around $15.00.
